With thermal lance work on large winch at IHC.

Twee pennen moesten we hier uitvloeien met onze thermische lans. Our customer had been working on the dismantling job for several days. Several hydraulic cylinders of a huge offshore winch had to be dismantled.

De lier, volledig in de steigers

Most pins were expelled with the necessary effort. But two stubborn pins from two different hydraulic cylinders wouldn't budge. One cylinder was burnt out, pen and all. But this pen was still impossible to disassemble afterwards. As a result, they contacted us. The pins were completely stuck and the employees involved were completely done with them after many frantic attempts. Hot firing, cooling down, hydraulic pulling and pushing with 65Ton+100Ton nothing helped. As a result, many precious hours had already been lost. De enige mogelijkheid was om de pennen uit te vloeien met de thermische lans.

A decent hydraulic cylinder

After telephone contact we immediately went on our way, because there was a rush! Upon inspection, the pins were found to be very severely corroded. Rust formation between an axle and fit ensures that the axle becomes stuck. At the location of the corrosion, the shaft thickens due to this corrosion. This ensures that an accurate fit becomes a kind of welded joint.

In such a case we burn a hole in the axial direction through the shaft with our thermal lance. This hole is then burned out to create a slot in the shaft, then the shaft is flowed from the center to the fit, without damaging the fit. The pen can then collapse and be easily removed after cooling.

Hot work

With a temperature of more than 3600 degrees Celsius at the end of a thermal lance, it comes down to knowing exactly what you are doing. A fraction of a second of doubt immediately results in considerable damage to the fit. In this case, the two pens were both out 6.5 hours after the call. The fits have remained intact.

Minimize loss

It often happens that a maintenance crew loses a lot of hours trying to remove an axle or pin. During the work, tools and forces are scaled up step by step. Our advice is not to worry unnecessarily long. Immediately a heavy pump on it, and if that doesn't work, call us in. A thermal lance can save you a lot of time.
